Boston College wins 2012 NCAA Hockey Championship

Boston College won the 2012 NCAA hockey championship tonight by defeating Ferris State 4-1 to capture their fifth title in school history, and third in the last five seasons. Steven Whitney led the way with two goals, the first and last scores, while Paul Carey notched the game-winner. Parker Milner made 27 saves for the victorious Eagles. Steven Stamkos scores 60th goal of the season! (VIDEO)

Tonight against Winnipeg, in the final game of the NHL season, Tampa Bay Lightning star Steven Stamkos scored his 60th goal of the season, becoming the first NHL player to achieve that feat since Alex Ovechkin in 2008, and only the 20th player in league history. This will give Stamkos his 2nd Rocket Richard Trophy in the last three seasons, and adds another bullet point to a rapidly growing resume that puts him right up there among the greatest players in the game today. Ryan Ellis scores 1st career NHL goal (VIDEO)

Ryan Ellis arrived in the NHL after one of the greatest junior hockey careers of all time, with a mind-boggling array of individual & team honors including World Junior Championships, Memorial Cup Championships, OHL Defenseman & Player of the Year awards, etc.

After spending the opening months of the season with the Milwaukee Admirals of the AHL, Ellis was recently called up for his first taste of NHL action, and tonight against the Carolina Hurricanes, he scored his first career NHL goal for the Nashville Predators. Marian Hossa scores 400th goal in NHL career (with Video)

Tonight against the New York Islanders, however, Hossa added another milestone to his NHL career, by scoring his 400th career goal, becoming just the 85th player in NHL history to accomplish that feat, in this, his 925th regular season game.

At the pace he’s going, by the end of this season he has a shot at hit 500 career assists and 900 career points (needing 44 to hit both). He has 53 games remaining to hit those marks. But tonight is about congratulating Marian Hossa for this major achievement.

Martin St. Louis reaches 300 Goals in storied career with Tampa Bay Lightning

Undrafted coming out of the college ranks after a standout career at the University of Vermont, he plied his trade in the IHL before signing as a free agent with the Calgary Flames in 1998. A bit of a late bloomer, it wasn’t until his 4th full NHL season that he suddenly became an offensive dynamo for the Lightning, and he hasn’t looked back since. Along the way he’s won the Hart Trophy as the NHL’s MVP, a Stanley Cup in 2005, and has been to 6 NHL All-Star Games.

The highlight of the 2011 Hockey Hall of Fame induction ceremony this evening may have been Mark Howe’s acceptance speech, a classy “thank you” to all the family members, friends, colleagues and mentors who helped him along his long road in professional hockey, which included stints with the Hartford Whalers, Philadelphia Flyers, and Detroit Red Wings.
