Father’s Day Gift Idea #1: The Stanley Cup

It’s hockey’s ultimate prize, and perhaps the most iconic trophy in all of professional sports, so why not get your dad a replica of the Stanley Cup for Father’s Day 2011? Just having a Cup replica in his office or man-cave will trigger the greatest memories, whether it’s Bobby Orr’s 1972 “flying goal”, Petr Klima scoring in triple-overtime for the Oilers in 1990, Bobby Nystrom winning it for the Islanders in 1980, or something more recent like the Boston Bruins’ championship this week.

Mini Stanley Cup Trophy

One option is the selection of Stanley Cup mini trophies at Amazon.com (8 inches tall) which feature the logo from a specific championship team, commemorating that year’s winner. You can also find them at Shop.NHL.com, but the prices are generally 10-20% cheaper at Amazon for the exact same item.

Other Stanley Cup Items

Pittsburgh Penguins 2009 Stanley Cup Engraved Money ClipIf a replica sitting on the shelf isn’t the right call, there are all sorts of other items available as well, such as engraved money clips from OnlineSports.com. Right now they have ones available for the 2011 Bruins, 2010 Blackhawks, and 2009 Penguins (shown at left) up for sale at $29.09 each.

Shop.NHL.com also has a large Fathead wall decoration available for $89.99 (just follow the link to Shop.NHL.com and search for “Fathead Stanley Cup”), which can really set the tone in dad’s den, basement, garage… wherever he prefers to hunker down and watch hockey.

So this year, give the gift of the Stanley Cup for Father’s Day – at least he won’t have to grow a beard, battle the toughest hockey players in the world for two months, and suffer a number of brutal injuries along the way to earn it!

Father’s Day Gift Idea #2 – Gift Certificates

Father’s Day 2011 is now just a few days away, and it may well be too late to cheaply order something online and have it shipped in time for Sunday. Instead, why not give the hockey-loving dad in your life a gift certificate to one of the online stores, so he can pick exactly what he wants himself? Maybe you think he needs new hockey pants, but he’d rather get new gloves, instead? Plus, you can typically print out the gift certificate and slip it in that Father’s Day card, no worries about paying for overnight delivery. Here are a few outlets which offer gift certificates for online ordering:

Hockey Monkey

HockeyMonkey.com offers what they call E-Gift Certificates, which you can buy in $25, $50, and $100 increments. They arrive as a code via email, which Dad can then enter when ordering hockey equipment or accessories at HockeyMonkey.com, during the checkout process. It’s pretty straightforward, and if he could use some new hockey gear, HockeyMonkey has an absolutely huge selection which Dad can choose from (both the latest models, as well as clearance items which offer big savings).

Special Discount for HGHQ Readers: Thanks to a special partnership with Hockey Monkey, you can save 7% on most items (some manufacturer restrictions apply) by using the coupon code GEARHQ7!

Fanatics

Boston Bruins 2011 Stanley Cup championship gearIf your dad is looking for hockey apparel and accessories instead of equipment (like jerseys, hats, t-shirts, etc.), then Fanatics is a fine choice. They’ve got a broad catalog of items dedicated to each and every NHL team,  and like I told you last night, they’re one of the top places to find Boston Bruins 2011 Stanley Cup Championship gear.

Total Hockey

TotalHockey.com has gift cards as well, but the only downside there is that they physically ship a card to you by USPS, so it’s probably too late to order one in time for Father’s Day. They do allow you to set your own card value, though. Once the card arrives, there’s a number on the back that needs to be entered when ordering online to redeem the gift. Total Hockey is the official retailer of USA Hockey, and also has a tremendous selection of hockey equipment and accessories to choose from. Through June 19, they are also offering a 10% discount to folks who “Like” them on Facebook.

So if the clock is ticking down just a little too far for your tastes, consider getting a gift certificate from one of these retailers and help make Father’s Day the kickoff to a summer that doesn’t have to be devoid of hockey!

Father’s Day Gift Idea #3: NHL-themed wrist watch

NHL wrist watches

Click the logo above to see OneStopFanShop's selection of NHL wristwatches

Another classic Father’s Day gift is the wristwatch, and while cell phones and other gadgets have the time readily available, lots of old duffers (including myself) still wear watches every day. So why not get one designed around an NHL team logo as a gift this year? I’ve found three different places where you can shop for your favorite and order it online for delivery.

The first is OneStopFanShop.com, which has a selection including sports watches from $51.95 all the way up to stainless steel watches at $129.99. At One Stop Fan Shop, orders over $75 receive free shipping (other orders ship for a flat $4.99 fee). Through June 19, you can also save 20% off your order by using the special coupon code 2011FATHER2 during the checkout process.

Secondly, we have Football Fanatics, which, besides a wide offering of general sports-related Father’s Day Gear, has a fair share of NHL-related wristwatches available, too. For example, the have a cool retro-style leather banded watch available for $39.99 for a variety of teams. There’s a huge selection over there that’s worth digging through, but they do charge for shipping, which could add $12.95 or more if you want your order to be guaranteed to arrive before the weekend.

Another option, of course, is Amazon, where can find NHL wrist watches at prices from $21.95 all the way up to $233.95 if you really want to make a special impression. A typical selection of the offerings there is included below. So take a look and shop around, but hurry up! There are only a couple more shipping days left…

Father’s Day Gift Idea #4: Wallet with NHL team logo

NHL themed wallets at Amazon
When considering a proper Father’s Day Gift, a new leather wallet ranks right up there with the all-time standbys, but instead of just going with the plain black or brown, run-of-the-mill offering, why not get him something more representative of his favorite NHL team? There are over 500 wallets you can order which are emblazoned with your preferred NHL logo at Amazon.com:

NHL Boston Bruins Embossed TrifoldAt left, here’s your basic leather trifold, in this case embossed with the logo of the Boston Bruins. It’s available at Amazon for just $19.89 (and yes, they offer a wide selection of teams).

Rico New York Rangers Embroidered Bi-Fold Leather WalletA little further up the price scale ($30.00), you’ll find a range of embroidered leather wallets with a full-color logo, like the one at right (cash and credit cards not included, sorry). The nice thing about that price point is that it qualifies for free ground shipping from Amazon, once you’ve passed $25 on your overall order.

There are plenty of options within this category over at Amazon, so you’re sure to find something that works for your dad (or husband, or grandfather, etc.). So head on over and take a look!

Father’s Day Gift Idea #5: NHL Team Jerseys

I’ll bet that hockey-loving Dad in your life has got an old NHL team jersey that he’s worn down to the point of total breakdown, the kind of comfortable garb that gets him ready for game time, and brings with it all those great memories from his favorite team’s past.

Isn’t it about time to freshen up that look, though, and give him some new threads to wear to the game? It’s not like he has to get rid of that old standby – after all, he can always bring it out when it’s absolutely needed, that special game that requires every possible bit of good karma working for his team. For regular duty, however, he deserves a modern NHL jersey. [Read more...]

Father’s Day Gift Idea #6: Hockey memorabilia

For the hockey-loving Dad in your life, I’m guessing a good part of the conversation around the game reaches back to his favorite players and teams of years gone by. But you know what? Hockey history is being written right before us, as the Boston Bruins and Vancouver Canucks battle for the 2011 Stanley Cup.

Help him capture both the glory of days gone by, or the glory days of today, by getting him a piece of hockey memorabilia for Father’s Day, and they have over 6,300 NHL items at OnlineSports.com. Let’s take a look at a few examples…

Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin framed photo

Just $40.18 from OnlineSports.com (click picture for details)

Pittsburgh fans will appreciate this framed photograph of Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, the heirs to the legacy of Mario Lemieux and Jaromir Jagr during the early 1990′s. After falling just short of a championship in 2008 against the Detroit Red Wings, they fought their way back to a rematch in 2009 and won Pittsburgh’s 3rd Stanley Cup in a thrilling seven-game series.

Patrick Kane & Jonathan Toews framed photograph

Just $40.18 from OnlineSports.com (click picture for details)

Another dynamic duo skates in Chicago, where Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews have led a rejuvenation of hockey in that city, filling the United Center on a regular basis, and capturing the Stanley Cup in 2010. After a bit of a step back this season due largely to salary cap concerns, can these two get the Blackhawks back to the top?

For those looking to reach back into NHL history, there are some great options available for autographed, framed photos of some of the game’s all-time greats. Sure, the autographed photos are pricier, but after all, is there a more iconic picture in hockey than the famous “Bobby Orr Flying Goal”?

Even if you’re not looking to spend that much, however, you should head over and surf around through the selection at OnlineSports.com, they have an absolute boat-load of stuff available at various price levels.

Father’s Day Gift Idea #7: NHL Grilling & Barbecue Accessories

Father’s Day typically conjures up images of summertime, and one of Dad’s duties each summer is to hold court over an open grill, cooking up burgers, steak, hot dogs, and all sorts of good stuff for friends and family. So why not help him do it in style, with some NHL-themed grilling accessories? There are some great options for backyard gear with NHL team logos, such as grill covers, tailgate sets (apron, oven mitt, & potholder), tailgate jugs (1 gallon jugs for holding ice tea/lemonade/whatever concoction you like!), etc.

I’ve brought together a number of these items in the following Amazon.com storefront, which allows you to browse around and/or make your purchase directly from Amazon. If you want to jump right to one of the various sections, you can use the following links:
