Tonight against Winnipeg, in the final game of the NHL season, Tampa Bay Lightning star Steven Stamkos scored his 60th goal of the season, becoming the first NHL player to achieve that feat since Alex Ovechkin in 2008, and only the 20th player in league history. This will give Stamkos his 2nd Rocket Richard Trophy in the last three seasons, and adds another bullet point to a rapidly growing resume that puts him right up there among the greatest players in the game today. Martin St. Louis’ career with the Tampa Bay Lightning has become one of the most admirable and improbable stories in recent NHL memory.
Undrafted coming out of the college ranks after a standout career at the University of Vermont, he plied his trade in the IHL before signing as a free agent with the Calgary Flames in 1998. A bit of a late bloomer, it wasn’t until his 4th full NHL season that he suddenly became an offensive dynamo for the Lightning, and he hasn’t looked back since. Along the way he’s won the Hart Trophy as the NHL’s MVP, a Stanley Cup in 2005, and has been to 6 NHL All-Star Games.
Last Saturday night against the Florida Panthers, St. Louis scored his 300th goal with the Tampa Bay Lightning, and the team commemorated the achievement with the following video:
