The wheeled hockey equipment bag will eventually be recognized as one of the great technological advancements of our time, right up there with YouTube, the artificial heart, and bacon-wrapped filet mignon.

OK, maybe that’s a bit over the top, but seriously, how did it take so long for these to become commonplace?

I remember back when I first started playing adult rec league hockey in the early 90’s, I lived in an apartment a few blocks away from Yost Ice Arena in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I’d hoist my hockey bag up over one shoulder, and trudge my way down State Street to play during the summer. While going downhill on your way to play hockey is fine, having to lug a bag of sweaty, nasty equipment uphill after being on the ice for an hour (or two) is a whole different story!

With a hockey bag on wheels, however, you simply whip out the retractable handle, and pull your hockey gear behind you like a seasoned business traveler strolling through an airport. You can look for features like separate pockets for skates, exterior pockets for accessories such as tape or extra laces, etc. Perhaps the most important feature is the size, as bags typically come in varieties such as 32-inch length, 36-inch, or 40-inch (there are smaller sizes available, too, for junior players).

A hockey bag with wheels for can be especially helpful for the hockey-playing dad in your life, because let’s face it, back trouble hits just about every man at some point during middle age, and taking that extra load off his shoulders can be a great way to say “Happy Father’s Day”.
